Amy's only different because Sam knows her. And of course that makes it harder. But how does it really make her different from the rest? If she were a human who'd murdered people because her son needed organ transplants, we'd send her to prison. And as soon as the police start investigating people with claws, that will be an option.

I was actually intrigued by what Sam said when he was vouching for Amy with Dean. I think he said something like 'C'mon she did it for her freakin' kid. We would have done the same'.

It's spurred a few interesting comments in my post for the episode that have crystallized another difference between Sam and Dean and their respective attitude toward this. Sam does get that, he does, because he's been ready to sacrifice someone his family. Faith, of course, but also in season 3 mostly when in various occasion, Jus in Bello, the episode with the immortal doctor, and of course season 4 culminating with Nurse Cindy, he has contemplated sacrificing someone for his family/the greater good. If Sam deserves redemption and to live, then Amy deserves it too.

Dean, on the other hand, when faced with loss, kills himself. He makes a deal to bring Sam back, he tried to say yes to Michael in 5.18 to stop the apocalypse (another form of suicide). And on this subject, we have Death itself - who seems to have chosen Dean as his champion or something - he told Dean to clean up the mess in 701) - try to drive in Dean's head the lesson that it is not acceptable to upset the natural order. In fact, when Lisa is dying, Dean doesn't go out there to try to make a deal to save her. He does something else that's questionable, but it's not relevant for this point.

So, you know, when I look at this show in all the seasons what do I see? I see how many people who have done things for family (starting from Mary's deal and passing though John's obsession for revenge, to Dean's deal, to Sam giving into Ruby's advice and in his demon's blood drinking) have each contributed to start an apocalypse. (Without taking into consideration the obvious manipulation going there and how each of them were also victims in the whole story.) Dean knows the story the way we know it.
